We moved into our apartment almost exactly a year ago, but it took me until March to start updating it. I think I’d put it off for so long because it’s the one room no one usually sees. You can just close the door and forget about it until it’s time for bed. But now that the bedroom is pretty close to finished it’s become our favorite room in the house.
The Old Desk
I sold all the big items that were originally in it, including a black Ikea bed frame and mattress, a custom-made desk with hairpin legs and a lamp from Gilt. The desk was the hardest to let go of because it was the first (and actually only) piece of furniture I had made specifically for me. But it just didn’t make sense in the new room. It was much too big and actually a little too tall. So I said my goodbyes and am much happier for it!
We also took the plunge and repainted the once sallow walls with a fresh coat of white (Benjamin Moore Snow White), which was totally transformational. The room instantly went from being dark and depressing to feeling clean and tranquil.
The other big step we took was buying new furniture – “grown up furniture” as I like to call it. I typically like to buy from a variety of places so it doesn’t look like your house came out of a catalog, but I just couldn’t find a bed or night tables that were as perfect as these mid century ones! I also said goodbye to the old West Elm duvet cover I had and splurged on 600 thread count white ones from Matteo. They make incredibly soft, simple bedding that’s sewn right here in Los Angeles!
